My friend, my family…..

When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.
– Henri J.M. Nouwen, Out of Solitude: Three Meditations on the Christian Life

In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. – Albert Schweitzer

There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature. – Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey

Well, it seems to me that the best relationships, the ones that last, are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is… suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with. – Gillian Anderson

I’ve been mulling over a few things for a couple of weeks and one I keep coming back to is “Friendship” and since a post is long overdue, today’s post is about…. wait for it….. Friendship!!! *cue applause* (why? err i dunno just felt like an applause was apt, hehehe)

I’ve come to the realisation that with friendships, family, love et al, we need to practice the act of going overboard. Hold on a moment, what do you mean go overboard, I ain’t going over no board for no one!. The truth is this is how God is with us, whatever you need that He knows is beneficial to you, He supplies.
I’ve been one of those people who goes out of their way for people, even when it looks just plain stupid. I was speaking to someone the other day and I think we narrowed down one of my languages of love as “acts of service” which means if you need anything, I’m probably the one who will do it, and without any iota of pride, I love “serving” the people in my life. You need a pencil? I’m aware of it, I’ll get you a pencil, I’ll even go ahead to get a pencil-case and glitter(someone saying cuckoo 😛 ) hehehe but anyways I digress.

This post is not about any “gone down south” or “ I will do anything for you” relationships/friendships, it’s about celebrating friends, especially the ones that have become family.
I’ve been privileged to have found that in a few wonderful people. In this post, I’ll talk about 6 lovely people and hope to continue with other people in the days to come.

Meet Bimpe, Sunkanmi, Omotara, Denike, Omolara and Vicky. These wonderful people have made the past 3 months of 2014 a joy. God sends people to you for every season in your life, not every friend is relevant to your season, it doesn’t mean they are not good friends or do not care, it just means they are not relevant to that particular situation/issue/season.

I’ve come to understand that there’s no need to get all emotional about people not being there for you or what not, they are just not in God’s plan for you at that point, it doesn’t take away from your friendship at all and I believe if more people saw things this way friendships would be a lot easier.(let me know if you agree or disagree)

The beautiful people I listed earlier, sometimes don’t know their impact in my life, their words of encouragement, prayer, banter et al have lifted my spirits countless times.

Omotara aka sugarloaf, your message a few days ago was like an anchor, giving me stability in a time of confusion, I love you girl and I’m glad you’re in my life.
Bimpe aka abimpylala, your strength, love for God and joy is like a refreshing bottle of cold Fanta on a hot sunny day in Lagos, love you maami.
Denike aka Deniks baby, the MUA, hustler(hehehe) your enthusiasm and wanting to do everything is just great and I love you for that and many more.
Vicky aka silent posh baby geh, you are an inspiration and a great woman, I salute you! Meanwhile one day, I know I will be hot like you (hubba hubba) love you sugarfoot :*
Omolara temi nikan soso, my very own CJ, I love how we broke down your defences and made you be you with us. Sweety booboo, you are stronger than you give yourself credit for! P.S I love you
Sukanmi aka Sukkylala, you’re just too gbaski, I’m just here writing marital notes and tips from you o great one! You’re a great man and I’m glad I know you.

Bimpe talked about a thank you letter to people in your lives and I’ll hopefully be doing a mini( and I mean very mini) series on that in the coming weeks.

I beg of you to take time out to appreciate the people in your life, don’t wait for a special day, time or moment. Let the “blurt it out” disease take root, tell someone how happy/glad you are that they are in your life. We go through life most times assuming people know how we feel, what they mean to us and all. I have this joke about me not being the Holy Spirit, so if you don’t tell me, I definitely will not know what’s on your mind.

So this weekend, I challenge you to tell at least two people how much they mean to you, how they have been a blessing to your life and finally just love on them, and show true appreciation. I’ll be waiting for your feedbacks, comments and positive experiences 🙂

I’ll leave y’all with this song by Hezekiah Walker which I think sums up this post, we all need each other to survive.
Have a lovely weekend and remember, your smile is the best thing about someone’s day, so don’t hoard it!!
