My name is Timiebi and I’m FAT!

What is it with (some)Nigerians and being crass about weight? Yes this is a rant! I’m sure you deduced this from the title (hehehe)

I was thinking about this yesterday and just had to “rant” and post.
See I’ve struggled with my weight for almost all my life( or the parts I can remember)
I was that girl who was “big for her age”, the one who looked like a “woman” at 16. Looking back at those photos I wondered how I ever thought I was “fat”.
Over the years I developed body image issues; from disliking my arms(aka Christian mother arms) to wishing I looked like my mum(slim and graceful) or just even be a bit taller. Each issue pricked holes at my body confidence, stabbing and stabbing until I looked in the mirror and never liked the girl I saw.

The first line said Nigerians, obviously not every Nigerian is like this but I found out it was prevalent among us( yes I’m Nigerian too πŸ™‚ )
Don’t worry, I will tell you how I came to this conclusion with a few excerpts from conversations with people about my weight, names changed to specimen for anonymity. Enjoy πŸ˜›

Say No to Name Calling

Specimen A : hey mama
Me: huh?
Specimen B: orobo how far?
Me: I have a name.
There are lots of conversations with varied text but all centered around one theme; fat people names!

I know I’m fat, I don’t need you to call me names because of how I look, I don’t go around calling out slimshady(is very thin) or spitty(spits when talking) or BOsky(has body odour). You get the gist right? Yup hehehe. Seriously, just because it’s funny/apt doesn’tΒ make it right!

Is Fat the worst things?

Specimen C: you look like my friend!
Me: really?
Specimen C : yes, she’s fat like you, character, talks like you( only met this person once and maybe spoke to them for 30mins)
Me: oh cool.
Specimen C: let me show you her photo( opens phone and searches for photo then proceeds to stare at me and phone obviously realising the “foot in mouth disease” )
Me: let me see, I did and was like bruh! (The only thing I had in common with said person was FAT!)

Specimen D: all this food you dey cook, how you no go dey big( comments about my food photography)
Me: huh? I haven’t had anything all day, I just posted that for my Facebook folder
Specimen E : you too like food
Me: okay…

I don’t need to know how I’m not shoving my face with salads or running till I can’t breathe. Do you think I’m oblivious to what I need to do? Oshe Captain Obvious!

For someone who has been overweight for a while, I can tell you that people struggle with weight loss/gain and it’s an ongoing process. Some people have genuine health issues that cause rapid weight gain, others have issues that causes slow weight loss.
You don’t know what people are going through and how hard they try, moreover what looks fat to you might be a healthy man or woman! ( remember how looks can be deceiving right?)

It's a process

This is my analogy; weight loss like anything in your life is a process, you wouldn’t give up on your business just because you had a setback now would you? Does that mean you’re a bad business person? No! It’s just what it is; a snag! All you need to do is; reevaluate, re-strategise and implement.Β I don’t even like the term weight loss sef, I choose to use; healthy living.

Yes I'm Fat

My name is Timiebi and I’m FAT!
I don’t hide it, I don’t tiptoe around it nor am I ashamed of who I am and what I look like.

P.S I LOOVE Myself, every single surface area of this amazing body πŸ™‚ and when I forget that, I’ll just refer to this post and be happy πŸ™‚

Okay rant done πŸ™‚

After the rant, while searching for photos to add to this post, I found a blogpost and I was like yes!!! This is exactly what I’m talking about. You can find out the 21 Things to Stop Saying Unless You Hate Fat PeopleΒ HEREΒ .

I implore anyone reading this to be kind( as we ought to anyways) to people in your speech. There are times I am silent, not because I don’t have anything to say but because I know I might end up saying something crass, silly or downright offensive. So I shut my mouth, hum, shake my head, ask the Lord for strength; I do anything but speak what I think is “the right thing to say”.

I would appreciate a “sprinkling of grace” when talking to me about this obvious topic, cos I sure don’t go around pointing other areas of people’s lives that “desperately” need “fixing”. Talk about “Fix it Jesus!!” Hehe

Be kind

If you have read this far, you deserve a BIG HUG!!! I don’t think I’ve ranted on this blog before but oh well there’s always a first!

This week I implore you to practice Colossians 4:6 and let your words be life to another.

Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out. (‭Colossians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ MSG)

Have a blessed week and keep on smiling πŸ™‚

  1. Timi baby, I’m so cracked up reading this. The naija culture is so crass, craze whatever, Nigerians don’t know when not to say something. Basically, no one cares about how you feel. You’ll hardly see a caucasian call someone fat to their face except they are purposely being mean.
Well, here baby girl you know i love you weighty ot weightless, you have a kind and genuine heart and that’s all that matters. I love your energy, your knowledge and your ability to apply it as at when due or necessary.
    I love ya

  3. Awww such a rant πŸ˜€. Used to hate hearing people spewing their random thoughts about my weight. Depressing Agents I used to call them. Now I don’t care so much, so far I feel good about myself you can’t reduce my inner shine. My motto is kill then with packagingπŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰
